Modern Studio Maternity Portraits with Laura Hollander Photography

I would love to share some advice for planning your maternity portrait session and some favorite maternity photos from a recent session!

I am so excited to be sharing some of my favorite images from a recent maternity session that I did at Honey Tree Studio in Portage, MI.  Erica and Dan were in town from Chicago, visiting family for the holidays and was recommended to me by her sister.  (so sweet!  If you love your photographer, spread the word! :))  Being the end of December, it was quite cold outside, and so we used this beautiful studio space in Portage, MI.  The natural light lended itself to such beautiful portraits! I knew we could get a variety of looks and angles during this maternity session. I would love to share some advice for planning your maternity portraits!

Are you wondering what to wear for your maternity session?  I will always give you advice and links to clothing options, but a classic black dress is always a great look.  I loved that this dress was form-fitting and showed off her darling baby belly.  Black and white photos as well as silhouettes also look great with dark clothing. I loved her clothing choices!

Ask about a clothing change- if time allows, it’s a great way to get another fun look during your session.  I love the satin dress that Erica wore.  I love to capture movement and this dress was perfect for a spin!  The light plays very well with satin material as well, giving great contrast in photos.

What can you expect from me during your maternity session?  I always encourage your partner to come along for your portraits!  I adore the snuggle poses and emotion in these portraits.  I love to photograph hands, especially when they are holding a precious baby inside!  Mom and dad, your little one will also treasure these portraits!  Pregnancy is a short time and I’m always going to be on “team document everything!” 🙂  My kiddos love looking at the photos that I had taken when I was pregnant with them.  When they were “in mama’s belly!”  So, if you are on the fence about a maternity session, DO IT!  You will never regret having portraits taken!

I will always photograph you at your best angle.  I like to incorporate lots of angles for variety in my final galleries, but please know that a professional will make a huge difference on knowing how to help pose and bring out your best self.  My goal is to make you feel beautiful and confident and for that to SHOW in your final images.

When is the best time to have maternity portraits taken?  I always advise my clients to wait until they have a nice belly bump, but not to wait so long that they do not feel confident.  Let’s be honest, there comes a time when you can’t put on your own shoes easily and it’s not a great confidence boost.  This window varies for every woman, but I think any time around 32-36 weeks is a great window of time to think about scheduling a session.

Are you ready to book a maternity or newborn session?  I would love to chat with you! And don’t worry, I can you walk you through everything from date, time and location, to wardrobe to your final gallery.
